about:

‘sleepy creature’ is inspired by medieval saint margaret, legend says she was tortured and jailed but couldn’t be knocked due to her faith. it is said the devil took the form of a dragon and swallowed her whole, but she emerged from the dragon, unharmed, and is often depicted praying or holding a cross in medieval artworks.

in my opinion, the myth of saint margaret is a powerful metaphor for female agency, and challenges the common narrative in art history that women might be weak or need saving. saint margaret is a symbol of strength and lowkey a feminist icon..

in my painting ‘sleepy creature’ the dragon, as well as other gothic creatures i paint, i see as a manifestation of personal demons, nightmares and feelings. which in this piece our character is unfazed by. that said, i invite you to make your own interpretation of this piece.
